“Foreign films like this are why is essential for English audiences to get over the opposition to subtitles.”
At the heart of the Vosges massif, a young girl and her father live in a farm far from everything. One day, all the sheep form their herd are mysteriously killed. Struggling to cop with the tragedy, the father falls into paranoia.
This brilliant and nail biting thriller from writer/director Quentin Richard will leave you wide eyed asking for more. It’s a compelling expertly made film which will entertain audiences of all kinds. Foreign films like this are why is essential for English audiences to get over the opposition to subtitles as they’re missing out!
Quentin Richard takes his time with the story and builds the suspense slowly, making it all the more chilling. The locations are incredible and captured to great effect. There is a true sense of being cut off from society and only helps to build tension knowing that our characters are on their own.
‘Léa’ played by Olivia Vanpoperynghe is magnetic on-screen and was perfectly cast. She delivers an honest and authentic performances which feels real and totally believable. With only two characters in the whole film, she handles her role with complete confidence. It’s refreshing to see such a good performance in a short film and expect her to do exceptionally well in her career.
‘Didier’ played by Denis Hubleur is the perfect contrast to Vanpoperynghe as he manages to create an unhinged and almost dangerous performance which becomes more erratic throughout the film. He’s menacing and a force of nature, making the necessary urgency in the film.
The film looks fantastic and suits the tone of the story. The ambient and subtle lighting creates even more suspense by utilising natural light. The director of photography clearly demonstrates a true understand of visual storytelling.
