KALU - Growing Up Wild

“Nominated Best Documentary”

★★★★★

“Whilst there are countless wildlife films each with their own merit, KALU is one that you simply must see.

A baby spider monkey named Kalu faces growing up in the jungle of the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. He must learn to climb, forage for food, communicate, face predators and make difficult decisions in order to survive.

We’ve seen a lot of documentary’s in the past but nothing like this. Directors Matteo Clarke and Roman Willi have not only created a breathtaking film in general but also something that may inspire others.

Clarke and Willi not only direct but also capture the stunning moments on film and piece it together into a wonderful story that’s both fun and educational at the same time. Focusing on the Geoffroy's spider monkey, in particular Kalu was a great choice and gave the film it’s heart that an audience can connect to which reinforces the powerful message of the film at the end. Karolina Matela colour grade is consistent and of the highest standard, making the imagery burst off the screen with its rich colours. We expect this was a really exciting project for the team to work on.

The cinematography is outstanding and every shot holds up with a high production standard. It’s especially impressive that this was only captured by two filmmakers as so much is covered. This really does demonstrate how talented Clarke and Willi are as they’ve managed to create a film that you’d expect to find on any main streaming platform and broadcast TV.

The narration by George McGavin is seamless and perfect for this film. McGavin delivers a friendly and welcoming voice that’s in keeping with the overall tone of the film. Similar to that of Kalu, the narration is somewhat playful and full of wonder which helps the viewer to make that connection with the films star. It makes the closing message of the film all the more poignant and we discover just how fragile and threatened the ecosystem is.

The score form Jack McKensie really stands out and holds up against the breathtaking imagery, something that is hard to do when the story is so strong even on its own. The classical approach to the score was the perfect choice and enhances the emotional moments in the film. McKensie did an incredibly job putting this together. The same can be said of the sound design by Marios Themistocleus that really stands out and adds considerable value to the production.

Whilst there are countless wildlife films each with their own merit, KALU is one that you simply must see. It not only showcases a team of passionate and talented filmmakers but also delivers a powerful message in a way that you can’t help but connect with…
