In the bustling home of horror writer Jodi Sloan, she battles creative block by exploring gripping ideas, only to discard them in absurd ways. Ben, her overly optimistic mailman, interrupts her solitary routine with unwavering praise, offering a peculiar comfort in his persistent encouragement.

Director Lisa Soper’ fun and hilarious horror Have a Good Day boldly flips the genre on its head for some truly grotesque laughs. It’s always fun to watch a horror comedy which takes on all the horror tropes you’ve seen time and time again but adds its own twist. Soper clearly has a love of horror and has created a brilliant entry into the genre.

Casting Lucy Davis as Jodi was a stroke of genius as she fits right in to the story theme and perfectly suits the serious tone of the comedy. Davis is no stranger to this genre and it’s great to see her in a lead role where she can expand on the character and comic range. The same can be said of Eric Johnson who delivers a frightening and chilling performance from the get go. Both performers had wonderful chemistry and worked great off each other.

One of the first aspects of the film that jumped out was the incredible location which couldn’t have been more fitting for a lone house in the woods away from civilisation. The vast scale and uniqueness of the location provided a range of shot possibilities which the team took full advantage of and kept the frame exciting throughout.

Whilst the film kicks off to a hilarious start, there is a faint hint of fear in the air that you’re waiting to happen. This underlying theme creeps along and comes out and the perfect moment, making the pay off worth it.

One clever technique is how the camera movements are used to add laughs, such as the baby POV being being placed in a boiling pot! This is paired with some great editing that works with a lot of coverage, seamlessly creating a passage of time and more dramatic moments.

Soper’ and the team deserve a lot of praise for what they’ve created here. We highly recommend going out of your way to see this film, it’s a fun and gory watch with some great laughs and a surprising end. What are you waiting for…
