Tod Lippy - Perfect

“Nominated Best Music Video”

★★★★

A memorable music video that does exactly what it should do, elevate the artist and the track…

When it came time to do a video, a storyline immediately came to mind: A talent show featuring a talentless contestant and three unforgiving judges.

Director Kyle Garrett’ goal was to make a call back music video from his childhood. Well we can safely say, mission accomplished! We couldn’t help but recognise many similarities from the golden age of music videos in this fun and well produced piece that fully captured Tod Lippy’ character and style.

The story is very fitting for the track and provides plenty of opportunities to inject creativity. Tod Lippy seems at home in front of the camera and has natural charisma that was put to good use. The judges are the perfect foil for Tod to push harder and harder, making for some hilarious moments.

The production is simple but effective as this style of music video doesn’t call for immaculate cinematography. What’s needed is clean coverage and a lot of material to work with in the edit, which DOP Aaron Fagerstrom delivers. Considering the location and blocking of the cast, Garrett and Fagerstrom made full use of the space and utilised some great camera angles.

This style of video reminded us of the same comedy used in some older Foo Fighters tracks where the performers don’t take themselves too seriously and instead have fun with it. This was the perfect approach and resulted in a memorable music video that does exactly what it should do, elevate the artist and the track.

Garrett’ clear direction and understanding of the source material made for a perfect partnership with Tod Lippy. We’re delighted to see music videos like this still being made and hope it inspires others to do the same…
