Folded Whispers.
“A powerful and heart wrenching performance that captivates everyone in attendance and leaves you contemplating the depth of Thomas’ words.”
★★★★
Mark Anthony Thomas performs 17 new original poems on issues of identity, urbanism, love, loss, race and the pandemic. The film is produced by Built Different and described as deeply personal, reflective, and "a love letter to the Kelly Strayhorn Theater," which is a home for Black and queer artists.
For the first time in 15 years, Mark Anthony Thomas delivers a powerful and heart wrenching performance that captivates everyone in attendance and leaves you contemplating the depth of his words.
What’s refreshing here is the setting of the performance, as it was filmed at the historic Kelly Strayhorn Theater in Pittsburgh's East Liberty neighbourhood. It acts as a unique and intimate backdrop where Thomas can feel a closer connection to the audience. In many ways, the audiences reaction amplifies each poem and allows you to feel part of the crowd as you watch.
Listening to Mark Anthony Thomas is an experience in itself, his distinct delivery and use of words help us imagine clear images that add more context to the stories. It’s evident in the crowd, as many of them are totally entranced and closing their eyes to hear more clearly, allowing the words to spark dramatic scenes in their minds.
The production quality is where the film could be improved somewhat as at times it feels static and without direction. Some simple tracking shots, camera angles and a more compelling setting for Thomas’ talking head interview would certainly elevate and add value to the film. Luckily the source subject is more than enough for this not to be a main focus of the film. But in the right hands, this film could really shine.
The pace of the film is good and cuts together well. By adding sequences between each poem to expand on their meaning and origin, the filmmakers give the audience a peak behind the curtain as to how Thomas’ mind works. The backing music is subtle but effective and weaves itself in and out of the film at the right moments. Thomas is big presence on the screen and has a lot to say, making this a must watch.
It’s clear from the reaction of the audience that you’re witnessing something special, and this film does an excellent job at capturing it and allowing others to see it…
